Our commitment

Our actions are based on long-term, sustainable thinking. This applies to our client relations as well as our social commitment. We attach great importance to supporting science and education, as well as to the systematic development of our employees. In addition, we have developed a comprehensive environmental management system, and we sponsor the arts.

Science and education

Both companies and universities profit from mutual cooperation. This is why we support the institute of insurance law (Institut für Versicherungsrecht) at the University of Düsseldorf. Besides financial support, we engage in a regular exchange of experience and information. Our most important goal in this cooperation is to connect science and practice. This includes research and development projects which we conduct together with universities and research centers. The research on the potential impact of climate change on the development of winter storms is one example.

Several of our employees are teaching at educational institutions such as the Cologne University of Applied Sciences or the vocational training center of the German insurance industry (BWV). For this purpose, we supply them with teaching material, e.g. statistical data and support them with flexible working hours.

We offer internships to students of insurance related, mathematic, or natural scientific fields of study. They can gain practical experience in most of our departments. Moreover, we assist students whose theses deal with insurance, economic or geo-scientific subjects.

In addition to our commitment to education we share knowledge and research in various committees of the insurance business. We participate in several workgroups of the German Insurance Association  (GDV). Within the commission for life insurance mathematics of the German Actuarial Association (DAV) we work on developing biometric calculations. Besides, we are part of the Network of the Versicherungsforen Leipzig.

Personnel development

As a reinsurer, we rely on the knowledge of highly skilled specialists. This is why we provide professional training to our employees. We offer them regular opportunities to develop their broad knowledge within and beyond their field of expertise. After all, to excel in our business, we need specialists who think outside of the box. Many tasks can only be accomplished interdisciplinary, which more often than not means cross departmental. Therefore we cultivate flat hierarchies and easy accessibility.

We offer our employees flexible working hours which meet their own and their clients’ needs. This makes it easier to reconcile family life and career. Our various models for part-time work and teleworking are especially beneficial to parents and facilitate re-entry after the parental leave.

Environmental protection

We strive to use our natural resources responsibly. After all, the environmental conditions affect our own as well as our clients’ future success. Environmental damage and above all the climate change are particularly relevant for the insurance business.

For this reason we have introduced an environmental management system which implements the requirements of the DIN EN ISO 14001 standard. This globally recognized standard ensures that our business operations meet all relevant environmental requirements. This is how we aim at a better sense of environmental responsibility within our company. By presenting our endeavours to the public, we are hoping for a positive dialogue which will benefit all parties involved.

In addition to our environmental management, we take part in EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit-Scheme), which offers voluntary environmental auditing to companies beyond the DIN EN ISO 14001 standard.

Arts sponsorship

Art encourages dialogue – in personal conversation as well as in society as a whole. Deutsche Rück therefore supports freelance artists in their independent work. We focus our sponsoring activities on painting and graphic arts.

Our art committee headed by the CEO keeps regular, long term contact to established as well as young artists. The committee actively searches for those artists in the region and throughout the country, but also relies on personal recommendations.

We purchase single pieces of art and order series. In addition we support artists with financing catalogues or exhibitions. Much of these artists’ work can be found in our business premises.
